Engagement Summary

The Province sought input from B.C. employers and employees on whether the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation (September 30) should be designated a provincial statutory holiday under the Employment Standards Act, starting in 2023.

Background

A national day to commemorate the history and legacy of the residential school system honours the resilience, dignity, and strength of survivors and intergenerational survivors and remembers that children never came home.

In 2021, the federal government designated September 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which grew from a grassroots campaign called Orange Shirt Day. This day aims to honour the legacy of residential school survivors and create space for Indigenous Peoples to engage in meaningful conversations that continue their healing journey. This day is also meant to encourage deeper reflection, learning, and public dialogue on the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples.

Since this day is a federal holiday, it only applies to roughly 10% of workplaces in B.C. While some B.C. employers may decide to recognize this day and provide their employees a paid day off, there is no obligation for them to do so. A provincial statutory holiday would change that.
