There is nothing incorrect about the use of 'put' in this sentence. 'Take' is an alternative, but you make it sound as if 'put' is wrong.

"Take" is more common in the US. Both are ok, but "put" sounds funny to me.
Just one clue: With phrasals+Object (both direct and indirect): If the Object is a noun: BOTH POSITIONS: TAKE THE RUBBISH OUT = TAKE OUT THE RUBBISH If the Object is a pronoun: ONLY IN THE MIDDLE: TAKE IT OUT (wake me up before you go-go...)
This is not a 100% rule, but, in general, 'take' suggests you are going to stay with whatever you are 'taking out' - the dog, your wife, your girlfriend; 'put' suggests you're going to leave whatever it is that you are putting out - the rubbish.
That's true. I only meant "take" in reference to the "Take out the rubbish" or "trash" as is more common in the US. I would take out the trash, but I would put out my dog if he's being bad. Last edited: Nov 23, 2011
But that is the very reason I would 'put out' the rubbish (trash), because I would leave it outside, but I would 'take the dog out' for a walkies.
I would take my dog out for a walk, too, but I would put him out if he's bad. I would take my husband out to eat for his birthday, but I would put him out if he's being bad.
