Audible is arguably the most popular resource for audiobooks to date, and those who have a subscription to the Amazon-owned service are most likely accessing the platform through their mobile phones. The Audible app is pretty easy to navigate through either an Android phone or an iOS device. It has a quick access page to a user's library where purchased audiobooks are conveniently filed and organized as well as a 'Discover' page to not only explore new audiobook titles but find podcasts as well.

Placing widgets on a phone's home screen is an excellent method for making certain mobile apps more accessible. Audible has a variety of really slick widgets designed for Android phones that lets users see the audiobook they are currently listening to as well as control playback for the content. However, the same functionality doesn't seem to be available for Audible's current slate of iPhone widgets.

iPhone users can certainly add the widget that comes with the current version of Audible's iOS app to their home screen or the Today View page, but what listeners can do through it is a little limited. For now, all it does is show Audible users what audiobooks or podcasts have recently been finished or the content title that is currently being listened to. If an audiobook is mid-play, it will be featured prominently at the top of the chosen iPhone widget style, showing its book cover, book title, author's name, and the amount of time left on the file. Unlike the Android widget, it does not have playback controls available. Tapping the widget will only launch the Audible app, where users can access the actual playback controls.

How To Control Audible Playback On An iPhone

While an iOS widget for current Audible members technically already exists, it's not designed the same as the one for Android, which is currently the only type of mobile widget allowed to control the app straight from the home screen. While there's no official announcement on when improvements to the current Audible's iOS widget iteration will be released, iPhone users with the latest version of iOS installed can control playback for their current listen on the app through Apple's 'Now Playing' feature.

'Now Playing' automatically shows up on an iPhone's lock screen or Control Center when any type of audio is playing through an iPhone app, including Audible. For example, when an iPhone user is listening to an audiobook on Audible, an audio card bearing the book cover, current chapter title, book author and book title will appear on the lock screen. In addition, it will show up equipped with a play/pause button, a 30-second rewind/forward function, and volume controls. The Control Center—which users can access by swiping down from the top-right corner of the phone screen—will also have a similar audio card that will initially only show the current chapter, book author, and playback buttons. When tapped, the audio card will expand and bring up every detail included in the lock screen version of the card. While it's not nearly as helpful as the Audible widget, it's a suitable workaround until an updated version of the iOS widget is released with actual playback controls.
