ASUS P8Z77-M Pro Micro-ATX Motherboard Review - Hardcore enthusiasts often need more PCB real estate for their massive graphics cards arrays, fancy network controllers, sound cards, etc. Not all enthusiasts are alike. Some prefer a smaller simplified approach to computing. While light in features, this solid mATX board may suit the needs of those not looking to build a hulking tower.

Thanks for the review. I'm curious as to what you guys think is the best enthusiast Z77 motherboard out there at the moment?

I don't know if there is a single "best" board out there. The entire P8Z77 lineup is great, but it is features that typically set them apart more than anything. They are all reliable, just as their predecessors in the P8Z68 line were. It boils down to their feature sets and how much you are looking to spend.

am i the only one who likes the difference in performance from usb2 to usb3?

No, not at all. But the fact is few care due to the limited market penetration of USB 3.0 devices at this time.

So is it correct to say that ASUS P8Z77-M Pro beats P8Z77-V Pro(which is also more expensive) in those benchmarks?

No that would not be correct to say.

Take benchmarks with a grain of salt. The difference is within the margin of error most times for those tests. Gaming benchmarks are entirely synthetic or CPU limited. The fact is there is no real difference in performance between any of the boards within the P8Z77 series or even when comparing an ASUS board to a Gigabyte. Every variable that generally determines most PC performance factors is now built into the processor. Well at least where motherboards are concerned. Most of the time when you see differences in benchmarks with these boards, it's because all the motherboard manufacturers cheat at the benchmarks by running turbo scaling out of spec so they can win tests.

And I'll go ahead with preemptive strikes on the typical follow up questions we get when this statement gets made:

Q: Why do you do benchmarks if they don't matter?

A: Because people will freak out if we don't. They evidently love graphs. More importantly, it is sort of an expectation of the readers.

Q: If all boards perform the same, what differentiates them?

A: It is features and overclocking performance that differentiate boards in this day and age.

And reliability. But I guess that's not really testable.

True but all we can do to test that is torture the hell out of the boards for the short time we have them.

i think the entire line up is really good.. reliability either way also.

It is. I haven't disliked any of them I've used. And I've used a fair amount of the lineup in reviews.

I bought this board and there's one little thing that bothers me: the eSata ports are not powered [or I haven't found a way to power them]. I tried to use my eSata enclosure, which gets power just fine on my laptop, but on this board I had to power it from an USB port. Kinda lame, but otherwise this is a great mainboard.

LE: don't let an eSATA HDD connected if you put the PC to sleep - most of the time it won't start properly. Weird bug.
