2023 GLC 63 Coupe

Mercedes-AMG is out and about testing its upcoming plug-in hybrid GLC flagship.

The upcoming GLC 63 has been snapped testing, ahead of a likely reveal late in 2022 or early in 2023.

Up front, it doesn’t mess too much with the formula laid down by its predecessor. There’s a Panamericana grille with prominent vertical strakes, swollen bumpers with broad air intakes, and a more prominent splitter than the standard GLC.

The car rides on big wheels with a very similar design to those of the current GLC 63, while the camouflaged sills are wider and more aggressive than the standard units.

Also new on the prototype are the rear bumper and rear spoiler, along with the traditional AMG quad exhaust tips. This time around though, those quad tips aren’t at the end of a turbocharged V8 powertrain.

Like the C63 sedan and wagon, the GLC 63 will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain in place of the current petrol setup.

Mercedes-AMG has re-engineered the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine from the A45 for longitudinal applications. It features in the C43, combined with a mild-hybrid system, and will form the base of the C63 and GLC 63’s more powerful plug-in setup.

From a base of 330kW of power, the fettled M139 engine can be combined with an electric motor developing up to 150kW and 320Nm of torque, though combined power and torque figures have yet to be released.

The current GLC 63 S produces 375kW and 700Nm.

The regular 2023 GLC range has already been revealed ahead of the AMG line-up.

The first Australian arrivals of the new Mercedes-Benz GLC are expected in the first half of 2023. More details about the local range, including pricing and engine line-up, will be revealed closer to its launch.

With the new C-Class not being offered in wagon or All-Terrain crossover forms in Australia, the GLC will be required to plug this gap, and build on the car’s success against the BMW X3 and Audi Q5.

Mercedes-AMG has been snapped testing the upcoming plug-in hybrid flagship of the GLC SUV range.

The GLC63 coupe is expected to share its plug-in hybrid powertrain with the C63 S sedan.

The new C63 S combines a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine making 350kW and 545Nm on its own. The engine features an electrically-driven turbocharger to slash lag, and a nine-speed multi-clutch transmission.

The rear axle is home to a 150kW electric motor, hooked up to a 6.1kWh battery pack with 13km of EV-only range.

Combined, they make 500kW and 1020Nm, and enable fully-variable all-wheel drive with Drift Mode.

The 100km/h sprint take a claimed 3.4 seconds, and flat out you’ll be doing 280km/h.

Beyond the PHEV powertrain, the new GLC is expected to look more aggressive than its predecessor. The wheels fitted to this test car share plenty with those on the C63, and the ducktail spoiler at the base of the sloping tailgate is larger than that of the current car.

Up front, it doesn’t mess too much with the formula laid down by its predecessor. There’s a Panamericana grille with prominent vertical strakes, swollen bumpers with broad air intakes, and a more prominent splitter than the standard GLC.

The traditional AMG quad exhaust tips are present and correct, too.

Although AMG variants of the GLC haven’t been revealed, the regular range has been. The wagon will arrive in Australia in the second quarter of 2023, with power from a single engine option.

The GLC 300 4Matic petrol will be the only GLC offered locally at launch, packing a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with 190kW of power and 400Nm of torque. It’s all-wheel drive, and sprints to 100km/h in 6.2 seconds.

A 48V mild-hybrid system has a starter-alternator producing 17kW and 200Nm, designed to deliver smoother start/stop and provide a jolt of extra power under acceleration.

A less powerful GLC 200 is available abroad, along with a pair of diesel engines, none of which will feature locally at launch.

We are fond of the new-generation GLC SUV, which brings better design, tech, and performance to the table. However, with Mercedes' promise of electrification, it is confirmed that the next AMG GLC 63 SUV will be offered with a hybridized turbo inline-four, unlike the previous iteration's V-8. Our spy photographers caught a nearly unmasked AMG GLC 63 with a more aggressive front and rear bumper design.

Update 8-6-2022: The AMG GLC63 Coupe has been spied for the first time, so check it out below!

Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 SUV Spy Shots

Following the launch of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV, we have spied the next-gen GLC Coupe, and now we finally have the spy shots of the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63. The overall design, like the shape of the headlights and the taillights, remains the same as the 2023 GLC SUV. We love how the new GLC looks, and given that an AMG makeover can make things look crazy, the upcoming AMG GLC 63 will be the best-looking GLC ever.

Typical AMG styling, including the massive Panamericana grille, wider lower intake grille, and stylish side vents, makes the AMG GLC 63 prototype special. In addition, the face is wearing light camouflage, so it is not so hard to decode the design treatments. The sides expose a set of 20-inch, 20-spoke alloy wheels, and the brake rotors, which remain unchanged from the current AMG GLC 63. However, the side skirt remains camouflaged for unknown reasons. The rear fascia has a roof spoiler and an aggressive rear bumper with quad-exhaust tips, which are the only noticeable changes from the standard GLC SUV. Also, the rear diffuser design will likely be similar to the current GLC 63.

Like the GLC SUV, the modern-looking dashboard has an 11.9-inch portrait-style infotainment display in the center, and a 12.3-inch MID faces the driver’s seat. In addition, the AMG steering wheel with a flat bottom and the AMG bucket seats will be standard fitments with the GLC 63.

As for the powertrain, we are sure that the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 will be a hybrid performance SUV. So we expect the same 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four with a mild-hybrid system from the Mercedes-AMG SL 43. In addition, however, there is a possibility of a plug-in hybrid variant of the GLC 63 with more electric power and a bigger battery. A 4.0-liter twin-turbo powers the current GLC 63 with a power output of 469 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque.

The current Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 is good, but given that it has started to feel dated, but the upcoming GLC 63 should arrive as early as 2023. However, this concludes that an AMG GLC Coupe could be in the works, and we might get to see it for road testings later in 2022.
