After Columbus’ discovery of the new continent, every country in Europe wanted to colonize the new world. At that time, Europe was increasing in population and resources weren't enough, therefore all of the countries wanted and needed new land. Spain was in the heyday of its power. They had powerful armed forces especially navy forces, and there was no match for them. Spain wanted the material aid and mineral wealth from the colony, and felt obligated to spread Christianity to the natives. At that time, discoverer(finder) of the new world(territory) was the keeper(ruler) of that land. Spanish conquerors, led by Hernan Cortes, allied with Tlaxcalan tribes conquered the Aztecs. Therefore, Spaniards won, and since that day, Mexico became a colony of Spain.

Positive effects

Spain’s purposes to colonize Mexico and the other colonies were getting new land, resources, and to spread Christianity. As they conquered Mexico, they got new land. Spain plundered lots of resources from their colonies, opened up trade and get profits and spread Christianity.

Actually, most of the countries which colonized the colony, usually doesn't have negative effects because of colonization. Because the purpose of colonizing is to get profits, not to get loss.
Some Spaniards were dead, because of diseases from the new world, and independence war.

The highly-developed(advanced technology) culture, new language(the Spanish), religion(Christianity) and institutions of Europe were introduced into Mexico. Spain opened up trade with other countries, and made profits.

At first, Spaniards destroyed Mexican culture(civilizations, heritage buildings). They slaughtered many natives and took lots of resources, such as silver and gold from Mexico, however, they  never gave anything in return. Spain made Encomienda system and enslaved natives. In theory, it was a legal system, but many natives were forced to work hard as slaves. Spain introduced non-native flora&fauna, and diseases to the native people. Native people had no resistance to diseases such as measles, smallpox and influenza. Therefore. many natives died.

In long term, the natives could speak Spanish, because Spaniard taught them. Also, Spaniard introduced new faith, Christianity. Under the influence of that, currently, at least nine out of ten Mexicans are baptized Catholics. The Spaniard took so many resources from Mexico and the other colonies in Latin America, because of that effect, currently the Latin America doesn't have many resources.
