I previously worked as a data analyst for over 10 years, and literally half of my time was spent using Excel. After I became a freelancer, I switched to Google Sheets and haven't looked back. I find Google Sheets sleek and fast to use, whereas Excel now feels slow and clunky. I'd highly recommend Google Sheets to anyone as their first choice for spreadsheet software.
Pros
I love how simple to use Google Sheets is, that it is all online (but also with the ability to use it offline too - giving you the best of both worlds). If you have used Excel, then there is no learning curve, and Google Sheets is totally free. The collaboration is excellent, allowing you to work with clients in real-time while both updating the same document.
Cons
Google Sheets is very similar to Excel, and has about 95% of the same functionality. However, from time to time there is an advanced feature that I previously used from Excel that has no equivalent in Google Sheets. This is only for more advanced use cases, and on a day to day basis, it covers 99% of what I need to do.
Reasons for Choosing Google Sheets
I used Excel because my 9-5 job required it. But when I became a freelancer, I switched to Google Sheets, as I find it so much faster to use, and it is completely free and able to be used online (and offline).

Since I don't use super-advanced features, I would say my experience is mostly fine, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to suggest the use of Google Sheets over Excel—I would offer it as a suggestion to someone who either didn't have the money to spend on a spreadsheets software or if their intentions were limited to relatively simple or common tasks like making a monthly budget or creating a to-do list.
Pros
The basic features of Google Sheets are very easy to use, especially if like me, you spent the first 30 years of your life on Microsoft products. Google didn't reinvent the wheel and most of the functions used in Google have identical syntax to Excel, so you won't spend time re-learning how to sum your rows or columns. If you don't need to do anything overly complex in a spreadsheet, Sheets is an absolutely acceptable alternative to its competitor
Cons
While the basic features are simple and easier. Some of the "intermediate" features require a bit of research. For example, basic conditional formatting is fairly straight forward—however, if you want to do even a little bit beyond basic, for example, look for duplicates (which is very straightforward in Excel), you need to apply custom functions within conditional formatting rules. And if you're not relatively informed or willing to sit through a YouTube tutorial, it's not going to be super clear what the correct answer is. Also, Google's customer service doesn't usually supply any help here; I've seen numerous threads between customers and Google where customers ask how to do very common tasks or ask about common features and the reply is a resounding "We don't do that.". I'm in a privileged position because I work at a company that actually teaches people how to use Google Sheets, so I have a free resource to teach myself tricks if necessary, but despite this, the syntax for "complicated" tasks is easy to forget and I do often find myself looking up the same things over and over again.

Fed up of multiple docs? This is a great choice

Pros
As a freelancer I work with lots of clients, and the time I have saved by not opening up a 'version' of an excel doc has been incredible. I can see who is watching, share edits, allow controls over who can view or edit, and I'm able to track changes with ease. The collaborative power of Google Sheets has truly revolutionized the way I manage my freelance projects.
One of the standout features for me is the real-time collaboration. Being able to work on a project simultaneously with a client or colleague, without the hassle of sending files back and forth, is a game-changer. The ability to see who's viewing the sheet and share edits makes for a seamless and transparent workflow. No more sifting through endless email attachments or dealing with outdated versions of files - everything is right there in one place.
I liked that I can give read-only access to a client, collaborate with a teammate to make a document right, or keep a document private ust for me. I do hope my data isn't being consumed for AI!!
Also worth mentioning the revision history is good as well.
Cons
While the cloud based nature is great for remote work, it can suffer from going offline. I've also struggled to autosum on some files whereas with Excel that was really easy.

Amazing Product At A Great Price (Free)

Pros
I use Google Sheets to keep track of our company's licensing for Adobe and a few other assets so when it comes time to true-up with the vendor we know what our expenses are. I love how easy it is to use this spreadsheet application without having to download any software and have access to your documents anywhere.
Cons

Running a business involves a lot of records in spreadsheet format that needs to be shared with people in the team. Being able to collaborate on spreadsheets real-time is a huge time saver which is what our team love about Google Sheets. And with the History feature, it is very easy to track who made what change and when.

I like that I am able to collaborate with my team in creating and updating spreadsheets for our company's financial records and other data that needs to be recorded
Cons
I don't like that I am not able to use the Ctrl+Shift+V feature when I am on incognito mode. I use a lot of browsers when working and always open them in incognito to make them load faster. There are data that I need to enter in a spreadsheet which also involves ensuring that the newly entered data follows the existing formatting of the spreadsheet, and I had to open a new window that is not in incognito to be able to do that.

Google sheets has saved me a lot of time and encouraged me to organize data and lists in table formats, which is a more accessible and attractive format. The many templates google sheets offers also saves me time so I don’t need to build everything from scratch. The fact that google sheets is free is amazing.

I use google sheets to keep track of email lists, budgets, and to list professional opportunities. I’m a PhD student and college instructor. Google sheets is great for making quick tables of info that I can share and allow people to add their info. So, instead of having to input everything myself, google sheets allows for more crowdsourcing and collaboration. It’s also a simple looking design that’s attractive and easy to read for a wide audience.
Cons
Google sheets has many buttons and drop down menu options. Despite this, I always have to search for how to perform certain functions beyond the basics. The buttons and menu options are not very clear or helpful. It’s very confusing and takes me awhile to learn how to perform basic functions. It’s sometimes a hassle to use google sheets for this reason.

Google Sheets is definitely the best solution I've met so far for managing a large number of spreadsheets. Based on the cloud, sharing the files is as simple as clicking a button. All necessary features are present and perfectly working. Documents are organized in your Google Drive, so they can be arranged in folders and can be browsed or searched very easily.
Pros
The software has all the features you could think of, it's fully compatible with Microsoft Excel and documents can be shared very easily with different access policies. And if you need a template or a particular solution to a specific problem, you can count on thousands of users who post tips, templates, suggestions and the support offered by Google.
Cons
Formatting cells is not always intuitive (especially for dates and times), and when you import data from other systems it may take a while to fix numbers and other fields (importing data into Excel or Apple Numbers is a little easier, with a formatting options menu presented right after the import). The user interface is not really appealing from a graphical point of view: it may be improved.

My overall experience with Google Sheets began tentatively. I was using a One-Write Accounting System, and then switched to MYOB. While MYOB was more feature rich, what the CPA requires from us is more than met by Google Sheets' features. Over time, it's been possible to switch our entire disbursements into Google Sheets - something I can then simply 'share' with my CPA. A breeze!
Pros
What I like most about Google Sheets is its ongoing development. Already easy to use, Google Sheets continuously upgrades functionality. I've been in construction for over 50 years, beginning with accounting books with double entry and lots of tedium about them. Now, it's possible to simply paste a statement from either the bank or the credit card company directly into the disbursement spreadsheet that I've built using Google Sheets. Each month I spend less than an hour at accounting work that formerly took endless amounts of detailed work. Excellent!

It is super comparable to excel and it is totally free and easy to share the doc with others in your google drive for editing.
Pros
Google sheets is free so how can you not like it. It seems to do everything that Microsoft excel does plus it integrates with some other things I have. If you need a spreadsheet software use Sheets instead of paying for excel. I have done full budgets and even made a very simple payroll system off of it that calculates everything.
Cons
I had used excel in the past so really the only thing was there was a little curve getting to know it and know how it was different than excel. Really the only thing that annoys me is that when you sum stuff it doesn't automatically try to find the numbers to be summed so you have to drag it.

I absolutely love it, and would be lost in the classroom with it! My husband, in his field, uses it often as well, AND we use Google Sheets at home for different reasons. The live updates and the easy sharing between the Drive makes it VERY easy for us to both access the info separately and see the most accurate copy of it.
Pros
The 'live' part and the collaboration is great! The integration with Google Forms is used daily to analyze my students' results, and I can easily add calculations of averages, standard deviation, etc. I also frequently use conditional formatting to help me visually see the data I'm collecting.
Cons
With a competitive program, if I am missing a parenthesis on the end, it will still assume what I meant and calculate it. I know this is small, but can be annoying at times. The competitor also show me the way a formula should be written, to make sure I am entering it in right.

Overall Google Sheets solves the problem of sending excel files back and forth from staff members. By sharing the Google Sheet with applicable staff, we are able to see real time information and we aren't left guessing which is the most "current data".
Pros
Google sheets has always been useful to our organization. However since the pandemic hit, we've relied even more on google sheets for up to date information between staff! When we transitioned from working in the office to working from home and not many workers had access to VPN, google sheets was an easy way for us to share data in real time! Though we use other similar software, google sheets serves a different purpose for us. It is simple, direct, and we can see the changes being made real time and even add comments in the cells for us to check in with each other. Even if we do return to the office, we will still continue to use google sheets.
Cons
Integration using this software was easy and we have not had any major issues as we know what Google Sheets is capable of doing.

Generally, it has been a positive experience. I like that everything is interconnected, and available wherever I am. My biggest pet peeve was getting an excel document on my Mac, and not having excel to open it with! Now, i can open anything, anywhere. Personally, i use sheets for budgeting, forms, and much more. I like that i can have two separate accounts, switch seamlessly between them, and still have everything i need at my fingertips.
Pros
The ability to have real-time back and forth while in a spreadsheet has been a sought after tool - and Sheets, thankfully, makes it pretty easy! My company is fully on the drive for email, slides, folder management, and storage, so using sheets was a no brainer. I love that I can link to other documents (great for OKRs and other larger initiatives) and I love that we can collaborate back and forth, and see who is in the document and who isn't. Version control has also been incredibly helpful when we had an accidental deletion of data. Mostly, I like that it is a quick integration with all my other tools for work, and lives in the same space.
Cons
I will say, it is a change. If you are used to excel, then there are frustrating differences. One that boggles me is the filtering capability. I feel as though it is over-engineered. I also miss some of the shortcuts I have known to love in Excel, that do not work as well in Sheets (ie: adding a simple filter). Another con would be the formulas - although I believe they have started updating this. In Excel, when you start a formula, it will give you the instructions on what next pieces to pull in - I would expect the same from Sheets, but find that at times, it is missing (meaning I head into excel to pull the process, then recreate in sheets - that is no good). There are other formatting issues that I miss from excel (ie: the ability to indent text on a specific cell) - sheets, bring that to life please!

I have been using Google Sheets for over 5 years now. No major issues so far. And it is very cost effective when comparing to the other spreadsheet solutions in the market. We don't have to put additional efforts to get familiar with google sheets. it has all the facilities as same as MS Excel. It has a very clean and useful interface. Not only that But also Google Sheets provides lots of Integration Options with 3rd Party Software and Systems in the market. Finally i should say this is a grate choice for any type of Businesses around the world to make their tasks much easier.

Overall, I couldn't organize my office, my work, maybe my life, without Google Sheets. It is still far and away the best solution to represent the abstract, then make the abstract concrete and specific, then put data into effect. Frankly, I probably over-use Sheets sometimes - as if it were a database instead of just a spreadsheet. But it's so tempting to put every kind of information into Sheets and let the visuals inform you. I could go on, but you get the point. This is "the" Google product in my office.
Pros
Easy to use. Super-flexible. Dynamic - move rows and columns by dragging and dropping. No need to cut and paste. None of that "Insert Cut Cells" like with Excel. Of course there is amazing integration with other Google products and third-party apps. Then there is the whole "cloud" aspect, which is life-changing. Once you experience real-time collaboration from anywhere, you really can't go back. Then there are the intelligent graphs it creates from data. Information makes much more sense when represented visually, and Sheets does that instantly and effectively.
Cons
Despite its rapid improvement over the past few years, in some ways Google Sheets is still playing catch-up with Microsoft Excel. For instance, Sheets still provides no easy way for the user to drag and drop large numbers of cells. Try it and you get an awkward exercise in counting, guessing, and hoping that an action does not result in a mess. Then there are the byzantine "scripts" you have to type in to automate cells or get a desired result. I'm not a programmer. And the way in which Sheets makes the user guess whether it even has certain features at all.
There are hundred "little things" like these that need improvement and could bee seen as "bugs." Or maybe Google just doesn't want to be the office standard. But I don't believe that. So yes, Sheets has a way to go, but it's on the right track.

Pros
Sheets is a great option for spreadsheeting, data management, and analysis. Since it's cloud-based, you need not worry about losing it, forgetting to save, etc. - it's always there in the cloud, constantly saving, and available anytime, anywhere, on any device. Next, it's logically arranged and has a user-friendly interface. Being a part of the G Suite platform (Google Apps), it comes free with your Drive/Gmail account, so there's no need to download any software, purchase anything - it's available free of charge. Sheets has the ability to do the almost every analysis you'll need. Lots of advanced functions and calculations are built into the platform. What I've been most impressed with recently is the "Explore" and insert graph features - it's very intuitive. Sheets does a good job of "guessing" the best way to display chart data into the form of a graph. And even if you don't like the bar, pie, line graph it creates, you can easily change it with just a few clicks. In my opinion, Sheets is the easiest spreadsheeting platform that I've used when it comes to graph creations. Beyond that, the add-ons available through the G Suite Marketplace give Sheets "superpowers." Consider exploring Autocrat, FormMule, Flubaroo, and RowCall just to name a few. Each of these add-ons were created by independent developers and allow the spreadsheet to accomplish even more! An awesome feature!

I have few complaints really, but some users have complained that Sheets lacks some of the heavy-lifting capabilities of other spreadsheet platforms. I would disagree, and suggest that you just need to explore a bit more and consider using an add-on. There are also hundreds of YouTube videos and posts that explain how to accomplish goals that you may be struggling to achieve. Another limitation with the software is that the amount of Sheets you can produce or data you can store may be limited by the size of you Google Drive account, which will require a monthly payment. I feel that Google's prices are worth it, though.

Sheets constantly gets easier to use and regular feature updates are a welcome breath of fresh air over rigid desktop based applications. The Sheets addon marketplace is full of amazing enhancements, many of which are free. I use the service daily for all kinds of reports and calculations. Thanks to its interconnection to other Google apps I can easily tie in data from other apps and to other apps. The mobile version of Sheets is ok, but I don't expect a great user experience on a small screen when working in large, complex data sets.
The built in integration of Google apps script enables power users to create their own functions and applications to really enhance and personalize the capabilities of Sheets.
Being able to share and collaborate with data in real time is a huge benefit over desktop equivalent software.
Cons
The learning curve for people familiar with Excel's UI can be challenging at first. Also getting used to the idea that the file lives in the cloud and can only be edited on a browser is a challenging concept for some people to understand.

This allows me to increase productivity for the business. I can work from anywhere I have a spare moment. Updating spreadsheets on the go. If I can’t make it to the gym, I can update a workout in the spread sheet on my phone which my partner can immediately access at the gym from the iPad and display on monitor for athletes arriving thanks to sheets paired with google drive.
We are a small operation and any additional cost, however small, is a big deal. Even if I had the resources, I can not see paying for Excel when Sheets meet and exceed my expectations! Again learning curve is small and intuitively obvious especially if you are a user of Excel
Pros
Google sheets is free, easy to use and with google drive I can use it across all my tech phone, computer and iPad! It is similar enough to Microsoft Excel that the learning curve is small. One of the best things is how easy it is to use paired with Google Drive. I can up date sheets on my phone, computer or iPad and the change is universal. If I am at the doc office with time to spare. I can write a program on my phone. Then go to gym and access it on my computer to display on big screen or make modifications via my iPad or computer. I can update a sheet and allow my partner to see changes and he can make adjustments to the sheet if necessary.
I am an athletic performance coach and personal trainer. I use it write my workouts, keep up with athletes assessments and measurements. Use formulas to calculate stats, BMR, calories, etc. it has become a crucial part of how I run my personal business.
Cons
There are a few nuances that are not intuitively obvious compared to using Excel. I had trouble freezing 2 columns etc the way I would in excel. The minor inconveniences are small compared to the great savings and the flow between google software products that make this software a tool that I would not want to give up!

The best program in the Google Office Suite-- Use often and highly recommend

Pros
This software has performed the best for me of any of the softwares in the Google office suite. I can easily create spreadsheets with similar functions as Excel and the crossover was not difficult as all. I was able to quickly adapt to this platform and use it for bookkeeping and organizing my thoughts for various businesses. I love that I can easily add to it and check it from my iPhone. Some of the ways I use it on my iPhone are for inputting expenses as they happen for my business and for organizing my pantry and grocery lists. It is something I use and check everyday and I love how easy it is! Additionally, I was able to develop a fairly complex spreadsheet (with the help of techy friends) who were able to write macros into it that they would normally use with Excel. Because of the easy link sharing feature, I was able to share this with other people to assist them in the calculations I was doing.
Cons
One of the biggest cons is not enabling people to share the document as a template. It would be nice to give a link and then allow people to have it as a template so they could edit it without having to go to "File" and "save a copy". This does allow me to use google sheets more than I use docs as a Microsoft replacement (see other review), but there are a few features I still find to be difficult. For basic expense and revenue tracking, I enjoy google sheets because I can access it from anywhere and update it from anywhere. But for my family budget, I still prefer Excel, especially with the ease of conditional formatting (which is possible but more complex in sheets). I also still prefer excel for turning data into graphs and charts. Overall however, Sheets is an important program that I use /daily/ and I highly recommend it!
