Mỗi câu điều kiện gồm 2 phần: Mệnh đề chính: kết quả của sự việc, hành động nếu giả thiết ở mệnh đề phụ xảy ra. Mệnh đề phụ (mệnh đề IF): giả thiết, điều kiện của 1 hành động, sự việc nào đó. Phụ thuộc vào tính chất có thực hay không có thực, câu điều kiện được chia thành 4 loại (3 loại chính và 1 loại mở rộng), trong đó câu điều kiện loại 0 và 1 là câu sử dụng thì hiện tại đơn. Mệnh đề if ở hiện tại đơn: Lý thuyết câu điều kiện loại 0Định nghĩa: Câu điều kiện loại 0 diễn tả 1 thói quen, 1 hành động chắc chắn và thường xuyên xảy ra nếu điều kiện được đáp ứng hoặc 1 sự thật hiển nhiên. Ví dụ: If I am sick, I get tired. (Nếu tôi ốm, tôi sẽ bị mệt). She usually walks to the office if she has enough time. (Cô ấy thường đi bộ đến cơ quan nếu có đủ thời gian). Lưu ý: Nếu mệnh đề IF đứng sau thì không cần dấu phẩy giữa 2 câu và ngược lại. Lý thuyết về câu điều kiện loại 1Định nghĩa: Câu điều kiện loại 1 diễn tả 1 hành động, sự việc có thực. Đảo ngữ của câu điều kiện loại 1Cấu trúc: Should + S + V s(es), S + will + V s(es) Ví dụ: Should it rains, we will not go out. Biến thể của câu điều kiện loại 1Trường hợp 1: Sự việc có thể xảy ra trong tương lai và nhấn mạnh trạng thái đang diễn ra của sự việc, hành động đó. Cấu trúc: If + S + V s(es), S + will be V-ing/ have/has + PII VD: If I leave Hanoi for Hai Phong right now, I will be staying there 2 hours later. (Nếu tôi rời Hà Nội đến Hải Phòng ngay bây giờ, tôi sẽ ở đó sau 2 tiếng nữa). Trường hợp 2: Thể hiện sự đồng tình, cho phép, gợi ý điều gì đó. Cấu trúc: If + S + V s(es), S + may/can + V-inf VD: If it stops raining, we can go swimming. (Nếu trời ngừng mưa, chúng ta có thể đi bơi). Trường hợp 3: Lời khuyên, đề nghị, yêu cầu và nhấn mạnh về hành động đó. Cấu trúc: If + S + V s(es), S + would like to/must/have to/should... + V-inf VD: If you want to go out, you must complete homework. (Nếu con muốn ra ngoài, con phải hoàn thành bài tập về nhà).
