It often surprises people to know that lip balm does not feature high on my list of must-have beauty items. “But you’re a beauty blogger!” They cry. To which my answer is “Yes I am, so I’m more discerning”

Unless I’m in a cold, dry climate, I never wear lip balm in the day. I personally believe that regular use creates dependency, but that’s just me.

That said, I do take care of my lips – I just do it at night. Like with hand cream.

I usually slick a layer of Lucas Papaw Ointment on my lips every night before bed. That’s my regular lip treatment – it’s affordable and lasts me years if I buy the large tub. That said, I have been informed that it’s increasingly hard to find locally, not that I know why.

A while ago, I discovered the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask and that had proven to be a favourite lip treatment. In fact, I never ever leave home without it – hotel rooms, airplanes etc have notoriously dry air. Sometimes, I use it just to give my lips a treat, and I wake up with soft, smooth, flake-free lips.

So, when I came across the Mamonde Lip Sleeping Mask, I was intrigued enough to have a go.

Actually, what made me pick it up was when someone told me that she knew I loved the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask (ah, the perils of being a beauty blogger!), but she felt that the Mamonde Lip Sleeping Mask was better.

Now, I’m never one to back down from a challenge LOL! 😀 So, I decided that I’d buy the Mamonde Lip Sleeping Mask, then decide if it was better than my staple favourite.

What was interesting about the Mamonde Lip Sleeping Mask is that it does not only help keep lips moisturised with the plum blossom extract, shea butter and muru muru extract; it also contains glycolic acid to gently exfoliate your lips.

Lest you cringe at this point and go “What?! Glycolic acid?!” I will tell you that it probably is very minimal in quantity (It is low on the ingredient list) and there is no tingly effect whatsoever.

The packaging is that of a flat tub, which makes it more portable, and the balm feels more waxy that I’m used to. After a while, when you’ve worked through the top-most layer of the balm, it does feel a little more slick and balm-like. But there is still a waxy texture to it.

There is also a light floral scent which isn’t unpleasant. But I much prefer that products which sit so close to my nose do not have a scent. Still, it is a fresh scent at least, not a heavy scent of flowers.

Texture-wise, I find it a little light. I have worn this both as a lip balm in the day, and with a thicker layer as a lip mask at night. Truth to tell, aside from leaving my lips feeling soft in the mornings, and flake-free, I am unable to tell if there is any peeling or exfoliating, as they claim.

I have carried this with me for many months to test it in as many different conditions as I can – in hotel rooms, in planes, in a cooler, drier climate. I am happy to report that it works well in all aspects.

I use the Mamonde Lip Sleeping Mask in the day, in place of a lip balm, because I find it is more intensive. So, my lips feel more protected from drying out. At night or in an airplane where air is dry, I use a thicker layer, to treat.

I’m very happy to say that I think this will work for most people, who like me, don’t use a lip balm daily, but want something to treat their lips as they sleep, so they wake up to soft, plump lips. You need soft, smooth lips so your lipstick looks amazing all day! 😀 It is comfortable, not sticky and just a little waxy but not uncomfortable.

If you are a regular lip balm user however, you may find this superfluous or too expensive, considering all the more affordable options you can get at a pharmacy. So, manage your expectations accordingly 🙂

IN A NUTSHELL

The Mamonde Lip Sleeping Mask is a lip treatment that you apply on your lips overnight, much like a sleeping mask. The texture is a little waxy, and there is a light scent. It claims to also exfoliate your lips, leaving you with softer, pinker, less lined lips. I find the texture waxy but light and comfortable. I use it in the day as a lip balm when travelling (I don’t wear lip balm on a daily basis) and as a lip treatment at night. I like that I wake up to soft, plumped lips in the morning. A nice, fairly affordable treatment that can last you a long long while.

NOTE: Name of product appears to have changed to Mamonde Aqua Peel Lip Sleeping Mask. Wish they didn’t do this all the time. Appears to be the same product.

Ok, I know you are wondering about this, and to be fair, so was I. I just had to know if the Mamonde Lip Sleeping Mask would dethrone my favour for the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask.

The answer for me is No, it does not.

Having used both over a period of time, my preference lies with the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. I have only used the original berry flavour, not the new-fangled flavours, so I will not vouch for the new ones.

But here’s why I prefer the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask over the Mamonde Lip Sleeping Mask

• It’s thicker in texture and more balmy – I prefer the more balmy texture, and the thicker layer of product on my lips
• It works better at protecting and plumping my lips – my lips feel noticeably more plumped, softer and smoother the next morning so I feel that its ingredients work better for me
• It is less waxy in texture – I personally find that if it is too waxy, it tends to just sit on my lips instead of doing anything else

Is there one thing I don’t like as much about the Laneige? Yes. The scent.

I have not tried the other scents available, but the sweet, strong berry scent can be off-putting to me. Not so off-putting that I will toss this out or stop using it, but enough that I wrinkle my nose each time I apply it.

Price-wise, unusually for Mamonde (it is a more affordable brand in general) there isn’t much difference between the Mamonde and Laneige Lip Sleeping Masks. The RRP difference is just RM5 so I’d personally put that RM5 towards the Laneige because my lips like it better! 😀
