I

n the UK, we usually get about eight bank holidays a year to celebrate holidays like Christmas and Easter.

However, this year, the British public received an extra two bank holidays: one for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June and another for her funeral in September.

We’ll also get an extra bank holiday next year for King Charles III’s coronation, taking next year’s total to 11.

The bank holidays can fall on different days or dates every year, particularly when a holiday like Christmas falls on a weekend, for example.

Therefore, it's important to know when you can expect a day off work so you can plan ahead and book your 2023 holidays.

If planned correctly, workers can take advantage of bank holidays to get long holidays while only booking a few days’ annual leave.

From Easter dates to the summer bank holiday and new year, these are the important dates you need to put in your diary for next year.

Which bank holidays are changing next year?

New Year’s Day 2023 falls on a Sunday, therefore the New Year’s Day bank holiday will be on Monday, January 2 in 2023.

Good Friday fell late in 2022, on April 15, but in 2023 it will return to the first week of April, on April 7.

The UK will also get an extra bank holiday for King Charles III’s coronation on May 8.

  • Monday, May 29 – Spring bank holiday
  • Monday, August 28 – Summer bank holiday
  • Thursday, November 30 2023 – St Andrew’s Day (Scotland)
  • Monday, December 25 – Christmas Day
  • Tuesday, December 26 – Boxing Day

Brits were treated to an extended four-day bank holiday this year, thanks to the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. But even though we won't be getting anything like that again next year, there will still be several bank holidays to enjoy.

Depending on where you live in the UK, you can expect at least seven or eight public holidays a year - including Easter, May bank holiday, August bank holiday, Christmas and New Year. Next year, we will see eight bank holidays. But as we know, there are some hacks to ensure we make the most of them.

In 2023, there will be a substitute bank holiday for New Year's Day. This is because that the bank holiday doesn't actually match up with the official date of New Year's Day as January 1, 2023 falls on Sunday. But do not fear - the bank holiday simply rolls over to the Monday and there's only one of these 'substitutes' in 2023.

Easter falls a little earlier in the calendar than it did in 2022. Good Friday will fall on April 7 and Easter Monday is April 10.

The full list of bank holidays in England next year listed below:

  • Monday, January 2 (New Year's Day substitute day)
  • Friday, April 7 (Good Friday)
  • Monday, April 10 (Easter Monday)
  • Monday, May 1 (early May bank holiday)
  • Monday, May 29 (spring bank holiday)
  • Monday, August 28 (summer bank holiday)
  • Monday, December 25 (Christmas Day)
  • Tuesday, December 26 (Boxing Day)

So how do we make the most of them?

When you mix your holiday bookings with the bank holidays, you can get more time off for less. For example, book four days off before and after Easter, treating yourself to 16 days off work. That way, you'll use just eight days of your holiday allowance.

You'll be able to do the same with the Early May bank holiday and even with the Summer bank holiday. Christmas will also make it possible to make three days of holiday into ten days off. Take off the Wednesday till the Friday after Christmas Day and Boxing Day, meaning you'll be off until January 2, 2024.
