How to Reset Microsoft Phone 1

Although Microsoft are in the process of ending their foray into the mobile phone world, we still find many people getting good use out of these phones and get many inquiries about how to reset a Microsoft phone.

At times any electronic device can run into problems. One of the most common fixes to try is to hard reset your device. We have outlined the process for Microsoft phones below.

Backup Windows Phone

The first step recommended is to backup your phone to the cloud. There are several options you can choose to do this with software such as Dropbox, Google Drive or Microsoft’s own OneDrive. For this example we will talk about the inbuilt backup feature which, depending on device, would most likely be OneDrive.

Backup Windows 8.1 Phone

  • Open ‘Settings’
  • Click ‘Backup’.
  • Select what you would like to backup; photos, text messages or apps. We recommend selecting all 3.
  • Click ‘Backup now’ as prompted to start backup.
  • Check your device is backing up correctly by visiting OneDrive Backups and logging into your Microsoft account.

Backup Windows 10 Phone

  • Open the Applications list by swiping from right to left.
  • Click ‘Settings’
  • Click ‘Update & security’
  • Click ‘Backup’

You can select to turn on automatic backups for apps and/ or setting. It will backup daily when connected to WiFi and charging.

Resetting Windows Phone - The Soft Reset

If your phone is experiencing a slight error such as an app won’t start, the camera won’t open or the device is just behaving badly, you might want to try a soft reset first. This process won’t delete anything from your phone and is completely safe to try for any problem.

  • When phone is on, press and hold the volume down and power buttons until the phone restarts.
  • Be sure not to touch the screen while it does this even if ‘slide down to power off’ comes up.

If a soft reset doesn’t fix an issue with your phone, the next step is to hard reset Windows phone.

Hard Reset Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 phone

  • Open Settings
  • Click ‘About’
  • Click 'Reset your phone'
  • Answer 'Yes'

Some phones may give the option to ‘Also erase SD card’. This will also delete any music, photos, and videos saved on the SD card.

Reset an unresponsive Windows phone

If you are finding your Windows phone is unresponsive, you can try resetting it with this process.

  • Press and hold the Volume down and Power buttons at the same time for about 10-15 secs until the phone vibrates.
  • Once it vibrates, let go of the buttons, then press and hold the Volume down button until a large exclamation mark appears on the screen.
  • Once this happens, press the following four buttons in order: Volume up, Volume down, Power, Volume down.
  • Your phone should now reset itself. We recommend plugging it into power now to complete the process safely. Be aware it may take some time to restart.

Restore windows phone with Windows Device Recovery Tool

If you have backed up your phone as recommended previously, once it has been erased by doing a hard reset, you may want to restore it from a backup. There are mixed reports on the success of doing this so it is up to you whether you want to try it.

If restoring a Windows 10 device, you can use the Windows Device Recovery Tool.

Otherwise your photos and videos would (hopefully) be safely saved to cloud based storage such as OneDrive. SD cards are also a great way to safely save your content from your phone.
