"Dearly beloved We are gathered here today 2 get through this thing called life". These are the words at the start of Prince's 1984 single "Lets Go Crazy!" I was very upset to hear the news this morning that he has died so unexpectedly. I was lucky enough to meet him once and witness his genius firsthand, not as a musician but as the director of the video to this hit song. We were editing a documentary at a Post-house in London and were asked if we would mind taking a break for an hour as Prince was flying in to edit his latest video 'Lets Go Crazy' and wanted our edit suite. We could stay and watch if we liked..so we did. He had flown his own editor 'Ray' in from LA to edit the video, which was a multi-camera shoot of his live performance of the song. Ray lined up 8 monitors in a row so he could see all the camera action at once synced to the playback of the track. Prince walked in, shook everyone's hands, and then nodded at Ray…no words exchanged…Ray pressed Play..Prince then shouted out 4, 5, 6, 2, 3, 1, 8, 7 and so on until the music was over. As Prince had called out the random numbers, Ray had cut from one camera to the other as though it was a live edit…They played it back…made two minor changes and then Prince smiled, patted Ray on the back, shook our hands again, said 'thank you' and left the room. It was quite something to see and I have never forgotten that special moment. RIP Prince
