Sau 3 năm thì dòng SSD 850 EVO đã chính thức có phiên bản thay thế thế gồm 860 EVO và 860 PRO. Mặc dù không gây tiếng vang như dòng 850 trước đây với cương vị là dòng ổ 3D NAND đầu tiên được Samsung hướng đến thị trường SSD phổ thông nhưng 860 sẽ tiếp tục kế thừa và phát huy những thế mạnh về công nghệ bộ nhớ của Samsung. Sẽ có 5 mức dung lượng cho dòng 860 gồm 256/512 GB, 1/2 và 4 TB, giá bán từ $139 đến $1899.
Samsung 850 là dòng ổ SSD SATA 6 Gbps vẫn được nhiều anh em ưa chuộng dù đã ra mắt từ năm 2014. Đến năm 2015 Samsung có cải tiến dòng ổ này với phiên bản 2 TB dùng vi điều khiển mới tích hợp LPDDR3 DRAM lớn hơn để xử lý mức dung lượng lớn. Năm 2016 Samsung một lần nữa nâng cấp dòng 850 với thế hệ 3D NAND 48 lớp thứ 3, không thay đổi nhiều về hiệu năng nhưng mật độ lưu trữ tăng gấp đôi trên mỗi đế chip thành ra các phiên bản 120 GB/128 GB không còn được sản xuất, phiên bản 4 TB được giới thiệu. Tuy nhiên, điều đáng chú ý là dù được công bố nhưng Samsung chưa bao giờ bán ra phiên bản 4 TB bởi sự thiếu hụt về sản lượng chip nhớ 3D NAND 48 lớp.
Những thay đổi về công nghệ trên dòng 860 không quá lớn, tương tự những gì Samsung đã làm với dòng 850 đó là nâng cấp bộ nhớ với thế hệ 3D NAND 64 lớp, vi điều khiển MJX mới dùng LPDDR4 DRAM và phiên bản 4 TB cuối cùng cũng đã được phát hành.
Nhìn vào những con số về hiệu năng thì dòng 860 không nhiều cải tiến so với 850 bởi cả 2 dòng ổ SSD này vẫn dùng giao tiếp SATA 6 Gbps, tốc độ đọc tuần tự tối đa 560 MB/s. Tuy nhiên, tỉ lệ độ bền ghi TBW (tổng dung lượng dữ liệu có thể được ghi vào một ổ SSD trước khi nó bắt đầu hỏng) giờ đây là tỉ lệ với dung lượng ổ và độ bền của dòng 860 PRO gấp đôi 860 EVO ở mọi mức dung lượng do khác biệt về MLC V-NAND. Samsung cũng giảm thời hạn bảo hành dòng 860 xuống còn 5 năm thay vì 10 năm và điều đáng ngạc nhiên là hãng vẫn cung cấp dòng 860 EVO với form ổ mSATA bên cạnh 2,5" truyền thống và M.2 2280. Từ ngày M.2 lên ngôi thì mSATA cũng không còn phổ biến và 860 là dòng ổ hiếm hoi có tùy chọn form ổ này.
