Ngày 18/7, Liên đoàn bóng đá châu Á (AFC) đã chính thức thông báo danh sách các nước đăng ký làm chủ nhà Asian Cup 2023, sau khi Trung Quốc rút lui với lý do chính sách "Không COVID" mà nước này theo đuổi sẽ khiến việc tổ chức các sự kiện thể thao trở thành thách thức lớn.
Thời hạn chót để các quốc gia ứng cử đăng cai Asian Cup 2023 là ngày 15/7 vừa qua, trong khi mọi hồ sơ liên quan cần được hoàn tất trước ngày 31/8 tới.
Danh sách rút gọn hiện gồm 4 quốc gia: Australia, Indonesia, Hàn Quốc và Qatar. Quyết định cuối cùng sẽ được AFC công bố vào ngày 17/10 tới.

Australia đang đặt mục tiêu đăng cai sự kiện này lần thứ 2 trong lịch sử, sau khi tổ chức thành công vào năm 2015.
Hàn Quốc cũng đã là chủ nhà của Asian Cup vào năm 1960. Qatar - nước chủ nhà World Cup 2022 - đã đăng cai Asian Cup hai lần, vào các năm 1988 và 2011. Trong khi đó, Asian Cup chưa từng diễn ra tại Indonesia.
Asian Cup là giải bóng đá quan trọng tại châu Á, diễn ra 4 năm một lần. Qatar hiện là nhà đương kim vô địch của giải đấu này.
Khác với những lần trước đây thường diễn ra vào tháng Một, Asian Cup 2023 sẽ được tổ chức vào mùa Hè. Theo kế hoạch, giải đấu sẽ diễn ra vào tháng Sáu và tháng 7/2023./.
